Others feel that they have no support from family or their partner and will have to face parenthood alone. The burden can seem overwhelming.

How Do Some Women Feel After an Abortion Procedure?

Every woman will react differently to an abortion experience. Right after the procedure, some women feel an immediate sense of relief, and others experience guilt, sadness, or loss.

For some, the reaction is not immediate; grief can surface months or years later after the pregnancy loss.

What Are the Potential Mental Health Effects?

Experts agree that at least some women experience negative mental health impacts after an abortion. This fact doesn’t mean all women who abort will experience issues, but there is an increased risk.

One study found that women who had aborted experienced an 81% increased risk of mental health problems, and 10% of the incidences could be directly attributed to abortion.

Some of the mental health problems cited included anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicidal behaviors.

Another study found that women who have a history of mental health issues, feel pressured into abortion, have existing maternal desires, or have conflicting moral beliefs are more at risk for negative mental health impacts after an abortion.
