How a Pregnancy Test Actually Works

A pregnancy test checks your urine for human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, a hormone your body starts producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. 

According to the Cleveland Clinic, implantation typically happens six to ten days after conception, and hCG levels double roughly every two to three days after that. That rapid rise is what eventually makes the hormone easy for a test to detect.

Why Timing Can Change the Result

The Mayo Clinic recommends testing after the first day of a missed period for the most reliable result. Test too early, and there may simply not be enough hCG built up yet, even if you are pregnant. That’s called a false negative, and it’s far more common than a false positive. 

If your first test comes back negative but your period still hasn’t arrived, waiting a few days and testing again gives your body more time to produce higher levels of hCG for the test to detect.
